The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a report on April 11th 2000, reviewing the emerging science of antioxidants and their potential for disease protection. The new Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for antioxidant nutrients selenium is 55 micrograms (mcg or μg).
The NAS report also established tolerable upper intake level for selenium is 400 μg. Upper limits for adults were set to protect the most sensitive individuals of the general population.
There is a long history of traditional food use for garlic and at the recommended levels 50- 200 mg of SelenoForce® per day, the corresponding intake of supplemental selenium will be 50- 200 mcg daily.
Typical dietary selenium intakes in North America are 80 to 140 μg/day. A supplemented dose of 200 mcg/day would cause the total daily selenium intake from food and supplements for an average adult to increase to a maximum of 280-350 μg.
This is a safe amount since it is below or equal to the Reference Dose (RfD) for selenium, which, for an adult of 70 kg, was set by the EPA at 350 μg. The upper tolerable limit of selenium is 400 μg/day.
